Fall Collection 2010

intricate bands of fabric layered to create unique necklines and off-kilter patterns of embellishment. Narciso Rodriguez played with such fabric layering, turning out more than a handful of sexy, short dresses.
Diane von Furstenberg (in good company with Som and Herrera) continued to fawn over flora for fall, recasting spring gardens in wintertime palettes, whereas Alexander Wang and even Wu incorporated touches of menswear – a look that had many editors a-twitter (literally). Touch-me textures stood out, whether in the form of delicate layers of fabric, encrusted embellishments or crinkled textiles. Badgley Mischka’s pale peach gown smothered in rosettes and Jason Wu’s festive frock festooned with feathers floating between layers of tulle proved the most fantastical incarnations; though there were plenty of daytime options to be coveted, from the feminine, Frankenstein-style stitching on Altuzarra’s coats to afternoon-appropriate embellished jackets at Chris Benz.
Metallics remain a top-tier trend, yet they wield less Studio 54 disco-ball glare than in past seasons, replaced by richer, darker hues of copper and pewter as well as more elegant incarnations, with shiny thread woven throughout luxurious fabrics. Standouts include Donna Karan’s futuristic gunmetal coats and iridescent blue accents, Thuy’s coppery croc-embossed trench, and Christian Cota’s gravel-textured bronze strapless dress. |
