Michael Kors wowed the crowd with classics re-cut and imbued with not-at-all-quiet luxury (floor-grazing gowns crafted from jersey, yet jazzed up with sequins). Carolina Herrera offered her trademark elegance, with perfectly tailored evening gowns and full-sleeved day dresses, many accented with touches of rich red, whether it be a single strap, a sexy stiletto or a delicate belt. Oscar de la Renta went for unbridled opulence as only Oscar can do: intricate embroidery, organza, and even lame found its way into this colorful collection, ripe with shades of teal, purple and scarlet. And Donna Karan, celebrating the 25th anniversary of her label, presented a modernized and expanded version of the revolutionary “Seven Easy Pieces” collection she debuted in 1985.
Though designers stayed true to their unique design aesthetics, several over-arching trends were still evident by week’s end. Red ruled beyond Herrera and de la Renta’s runways, showing up at Peter Som in the form of an Albertus Swanepoel cloche and at Yigal Azrouel as a double-take-worthy diagonally zippered coat.
