From this simple idea, Miguelina has grown a company that is stocked in 27 countries, has a huge roster of celebrity clients, and is synonymous with getaway chic. Now the line is sold in some of the world’s chicest hotels including the One and Only resorts and the St Regis.

It’s a long way from how she started out, dying cheese cloth at home in her bathtub. Calypso started to order her pieces, and then Fred Segal. “When I moved to New York, Donna Karan was the big thing, and all the clothes were grey black and brown. I thought, ‘I can’t dress like that.’ That’s why I started making my clothes because I could not find color. The city looked grey and I wanted to paint it!”

She spent two years working with Emanuel Ungaro, and she thought, “Wow, there is somebody else like me.”

The first solo collection that Miguelina showed included 12 different hues, and she didn’t use black for five years. “I have never been afraid of using colour. Color is a way to feel, “Yes, I am on vacation and it’s time to have fun.”

And her eye-catching designs inspire us to do the same.
