September used to be synonymous with all things Back to School, but the overwhelming success of Fashion’s Night Out debut last year has us all thinking Back to Shopping. Design houses with e-commerce sites have changed the landscape of shopping, and the credit card swipe has faced marked competition from the mouse click. Such seeming convenience, however, does not come without a price. |

What is lost in the process is the experience of shopping itself, which is as integral an aspect as the actual items we bring into our homes and our lives. When we shop, we are patrons of art, but we also pay tribute to presentation. From the polished black floors and cascading glass chandelier of uptown’s Edit boutique to the sprawling, zebrawood staircase and vast, cavernous spaces of the Prada flagship store in Soho, shops are created to delight, entertain, soothe, and at times even distract. They are portals into individualized worlds in which a designer or owner’s flight of fancy is captured and crystallized, and
