Mumbai meets Madison Avenue this Fall, and Soigné Kothari's eponymous boutique is a blank marbled slate for anyone entering with preconceived visions of modern Indian fashion. The two-story, 2,800-square-foot space soars with floor-to-ceiling windows, a graduated second story, and a deceptively minimalist aesthetic. An abstract gold eye is the only architectural detail on walls that sparkle, and before we can ask, the Indian native urges, "Look deeper."

Indeed, closed drawers open easily, unveiling a seemingly endless array of earrings, rings, necklaces, and bracelets. Some of the pieces are designed by the owner, who received a degree in Fashion Merchandising from FIT and went on to design the successful jewelry brand Karma. But there are other labels, from both recognizable Indian designers and emerging talents, that range from costume baubles to clutches adorned with semi-precious and precious stones. Bamboo rings ($148) sit adjacent to emerald and ruby clutches. And yet every unique piece seems to whisper a story Soigné can readily narrate; there is a genuine love for every item she discovers and a palpable pleasure derived
