Searching for the perfect wedding gown five years ago, I was frustrated by the rigmarole of buying a traditional wedding dress – endless fittings, months of waiting, not to mention over-the-top gowns I didn’t even like (I ended up buying a simple, ivory “non-wedding dress” shift by Dolce and Gabbana). There was something missing for me and other time-starved, fashion-conscious brides: I used the Internet in every other area of my life, but there was no good resource online for helping me plan my wedding. I yearned for online research tools, access to past runway looks, and a guide to chic accessories.

That’s all changed now, as companies have jumped in to fill the void. Almost every aspect of the modern wedding can be planned and paid for online; from dresses, bridesmaids outfits, gift registries, honeymoons, invitations and thank-you cards. There’s advice on how to phrase a formal invitation and iPhone apps that will help to plan the whole event, or browse dress styles while riding in a taxi or sitting in the doctor’s office waiting room.
