take requests while on the road. The duo’s suitcase souvenirs are beautifully displayed on rustic wooden tables, including a collection of multi-sized handmade scissors, individually signed by an Indian craftsman; a collection of found figure drawings from France; ancient carved crucifixes; overstuffed furniture with gilded frames; and a bevy of anonymous bronze busts.
Nestled next to the waterside metropolis of freshly built condos, Darr is housed in what used to be a sunny hair salon called Public. Despite the large windows and stark skyscraper surroundings, Benmira and Cousins have managed to imprint their old world sensibilities onto the space. Black tin paneling covers the walls, and original hardwood floors set the tone for the strange, romantic and unusual mix of curiosities that, in this brooding setting, inexplicably yet harmoniously fit together. Oh, and everything’s for rent. A go-to favorite of local movie production studios, Darr shares its wares for short-term rentals at 25% of the full ticket price. In a place where modern and classic continually collide, it’s good to know you can have your Starbucks soy latte and the 19th century settee, too.
