As fast-paced and hectic as New York City can be, there’s happily no shortage of blissfully peaceful sanctuaries on this fair island within which to escape and take a much-deserved moment (or afternoon!) to recharge. However the tricky part can be finding the right place to relax. |

Ask a dozen Manhattanites for a spa recommendation and you probably won’t get the same name twice. But ask the impossibly fresh-faced ladies of the Upper East Side and, these days, you probably won’t get an answer at all. The Surrey Hotel, a Beaux-Arts behemoth, recently moved in on East 76th Street, complete with state-of-the-art spa in tow. Like any gracious neighbor, the surrounding residents have been paying visits. But with private treatment rooms (showering en-masse, begone!), a personalized menu of services, and a residential (albeit Architectural Digest-quality) feel, they’re keeping their lips tight about this new sensation on the block.
“I don’t think there’s anyone like us,” said Spa Director Cheryl Jacobs, who was recently denied her request to spread the word by two new clients, who live just up the street. “They said they wanted to keep this place all to themselves,” she explained.
