Julie Macklowe’s Packing Tips: How to Travel Light

This week I’m on a cross-country tour for 10 days, Los Angeles to Houston to Dallas and then back to New York, and I’ve packed everything in a carry on! Even with a full schedule of personal appearances at vbeauté’s retailers, store visits and black tie dinners, I only need a few items to transition from each event. Here, is how I do it.

Make your outfits interchangeable.

I stick with one color palette: black, white and grey or browns and creams.  I love Rick Owens tops to match with black pants, jeans or a skirt. With just a few pieces, I can create several looks, plus the tops don’t take up much space.

Keep your beauty routine simple.

I always carry on my vbeauté It Kit with my skincare essentials, and I bring an eye shadow palette with shades of nudes. I swipe on a little eyeliner and mascara, and I’m ready to go in ten minutes (shower included!).

Dress it up with just two or three items.

Heels and a blazer are all you need to go from day to night. I throw on my blazer over jeans and slide on my black heels, and I’m ready for an evening out. I like to wear a blazer on the plane to avoid unwanted wrinkles, and it helps keep me warm on the flight. I also never leave without a Zang Toi knit dress. His designs are perfect for a black tie evening and easy to pack.

Roll Your Clothes.

Stick with knit tops and avoid things that need to be ironed. If you have an item that might crease, use tissue paper. I have so much more space when I roll my clothes—I must have room for my vibrams!
