A Glamorous Evening at the British Fashion Awards in London

On Monday evening, the British Fashion Council hosted their annual British Fashion Award ceremony at The Savoy Hotel and theatre in London. Now that I am based in London, this year, I had the opportunity to attend this glamorous and exclusive black tie event.

Around 7pm, the ceremony commenced, hosted by George Lamb and Lauren Laverne who insisted on the fact that London is the city that everyone is talking about—which is why it was recently named fashion capital of the world.  Attendees from designers, actors, to retailers and models were all wearing their prettiest gowns such as BFC Ambassador Samantha Cameron, Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham, Kate Hudson, Colin Firth, Olivia Palermo, Marc Jacobs and Alexa Chung (who won the British Style award).

The first award for Emerging Talent Ready-to-Wear was awarded to Mary Katrantzou, a gifted young Greek designer who has clients like Blake Lively, Keira Knightley and Anna Dello Russo on her list. Katrantzou has been on the industry’s radar these past few months, and is also launching a capsule collection for Topshop in early 2012. Runner-ups for this category were Christopher Kane and Peter Pilotto who also have shown great accomplishments this year.

British photographer David Sims handed the Model of the Year award to the charismatic supermodel Stella Tennant—known for her androgynous beauty she has been featured in many advertising campaigns this season such as Zara, Chanel and Celine.

Victoria Beckham, along with Tom Ford, Burberry and Stella McCartney were nominated for the Designer Brand award. Marc Jacobs had the honor of handing the award to Victoria Beckham who was very emotional and moved the whole audience with her acceptance speech. PinkMemo fave, Charlotte Olympia won the Accessory Award for her glamorous footwear designs inspired from the 40’s and 50’s.

This year, the New Establishment Award was introduced to recognize a particular movement in British fashion that is taking the industry by storm, according to the British Fashion Council. Christopher Kane was the proud winner for this category against runner-up Erdem and Jonathan Saunders. Over the years, Christopher Kane has become London’s favorite designer and his collections have caught the attention of all fashion magazines.

Sam Gainsbury of Gainsbury and Whiting, won the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator award, and the Red Carpet award went to Stella McCartney with her dear friend Kate Hudson, presenting the award with an amusing and anecdotal speech about the designer.

Last but not least, our wishes came true, Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen was named Designer of The Year, no small feat for keeping the essence of McQueen alive. Since McQueen’s untimely passing, Burton has worked on the amazing Savage Beauty exhibition in New York last spring, and also designed Kate Middleton’s beautiful royal gown.
