Lam’s New Loc

For Derek Lam’s new digs, SoHo is the spot.  Or, more specifically, CroHo, at the cool corner of Crosby and Howard in lower Manhattan.  Here, the designer has deigned to open his very first store, a sleek, sweeping space that will offer a completely new shopping experience, according to Lam.  Designed by renowned Tokyo-based firm SANAA, the upper floors house his in-house PR office and studio whilst the remaining exhibition-like space is sectioned off with contemporary acrylic pods for the sake of displaying the designer’s goods in divine order.  An opening party earlier this month brought forth the likes of Vogue’s Anna Wintour, Genevieve Jones, Rihanna, and Brian Atwood in a mix-and-match of models, industry types, and general lovers of Lam.

The designer debuted his first collection in 2003 and has been lauded liberally in the interim, scoring a nomination for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund amongst other accolades.  With the expansion of his brand to include eyewear, footwear, and accessories, Lam extended his empire in 2005 with his appointment as the creative director for Italian luxury house Tod’s.  For fall, his collection features draped jersey gowns and plenty of metallics with injections of slick leathers and sumptuous furs paired with luxurious upper-length gloves.  A most glam offering, Mr. Lam.

Fete at the Met

The fashion flock came out in full force for Monday evening’s Costume Institute Gala, welcomed warmly by industry darlings and co-chairs Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, Anna Wintour, and Justin Timberlake.  This year’s Model as Muse theme served in the bringing forth of substantial sartorial selections, as Moss glowed in a metallic Marc Jacobs dress, Wintour stunned in a floor-length, black-and-white patterned Chanel Haute Couture gown, and Justin Timberlake cleverly donned bespoke William Rast, his own label, as a subtle compliment to girlfriend Jessica Biel’s fire-engine red Versace Atelier frock.

As the modern epitome of model and muse, Gisele Bündchen was radiant in sexy, sequined navy custom Versace, and Madonna wowed in head-to-toe Louis Vuitton, a complete look with thigh high boots, bird-like headpiece and all.  As muse to Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham towered in Louis Vuitton platform sandals and a Marc Jacobs dress, very French and flirty, with a polka-dot pattern.  The archetypal model and muse, Lauren Hutton was gorgeous as ever in a simple Michael Kors gown and young bright thing Kate Bosworth appeared as a vision of classic glamour with flowing ringlets and bright red lips.  With far too many sensational showings packed into one evening, the event was full-on fashion fodder complete with bountiful beauty and a cornucopia of couture.
