Project Runway 6

Project Runway’s sixth season has not yet been aired. As Heidi Klum pointed out, “This is the first time the finalists have made it to New York Fashion Week without people across America knowing their names and stories.” At the moment, no one knows the personality or design sense of any of the contestants, including the final three. Shrouded in mystery, the finalists, who ever they may be, wowed the audience with their Bryant Park debut. Judges, Nina Garcia, Michael Kors, and International Herald Tribune Fashion Editor, Suzy Menkes, looked on with curious enthusiasm as three distinct lines walked the runway. Christian Siriano, last year’s winner, was also present in the front row, offering his successors support.

The first designer featured super-sized sweaters that invoked a Jestsons-style futuristic aesthetic, focusing on V-lines and melding the look with a hippy attitude. The models wore teased hair-styles with headbands to accentuate this concept. The second designer offered more dramatic and polished looks. She featured beautiful silk gowns with braided details and perfectly fascinating structural organza dresses. The rumor throughout the crowd was that the third designer would be designated the winner. Her military meets S&M fetish, wool, leather, pod hat combinations were definitely quite unique. It will be a close call between the second and third designers and we will have to wait until Project Runway season six airs to find out!

Lovely Thuy

Thuy Diep’s Fall Winter 2009 presentation yesterday at The Salon at Bryant Park was outstandingly, optimistically refined; a study in fluidity of form, textural variety, and precise tailoring, for which, of course, Thuy is well regarded. A neutral color palette of charcoal gray, black, and white permeated Thuy’s grouping of garments, with interjections of blues and greens as well as watercolor patterns and plaids providing pops of visual stimulation. The clothes were ladylike and lovely, and, though verging on safe, the collection was one of polished refinement and focused femininity. Thuy provided flattering silhouettes with clean combinations of belted waists, thigh-skimming skirts, and tailored toppers. Geometric details formed out of metallic pieces of fabric were applied to crisp white dresses and coats for designs that were the embodiment of modernity.

A feathertail vest belted and layered over a sheer-sleeved, cinched waist blouse was a standout, and a similar skirt paired with a mutton-sleeved jacket, belted at the waist and worn atop a crisp white collared shirt was neatly tidy yet new and fresh. A fluid metallic silver pant, almost a baggy take on the jodhpur, worn with a sheer white shell layered beneath a black tuxedo jacket with a marvelous sheen made for an outstanding overall look. In this, her first collaboration with milliner Heather Huey, Thuy wowed spectators with the dynamic addition of bold hats in fabulous fabrics; an innovative injection of whimsy into a collection so refined and lovely.
