Finland Splashes on to the Runway at NYFW

Dramatic floral print dresses, light summer jackets, extravagant shoulders, and signature graphic tees descended into RUNWAY@Pier 57 as cult Finnish fashion brand Ivana Helsinki splashed onto New York Fashion Week with the Spring/Summer 2013 collection—Mourning Sun Motel.

Camilla Santuti, Cappie Pondexter, Erika Spring, Ryan Serhant and Devorah Rose all took front row for the brand’s signature exaggerated silhouettes and eye-catching prints, which were based on a short 3D film shot by designer Paola Suhonen in Finland during the Summer of 2012 and centered around guests at an old motel during an apocalyptic summer. The runway show featured footwear provided by Seychelles, and hair and makeup created by Brian C. Hawkins for Paul Mitchell and Mirabella, with stylists uploading looks live from the event using the Bangstyle app.

Recognizable for uniquely feminine Finnish hand knits and original print designs – the Ivana Helsinki women’s label is regularly seen within the pages of international fashion magazines, as well as gaining celebrity fans with Helena Christensen, Juliette Lewis, Peaches Geldof, Beth Ditto and Maja Ivarsson.

An after party drew in fashionable females and sharp gentlemen at the Ivana Helsinki Concept Store on 251 Elizabeth Street with DJ Erika Spring and a performance by songbird Alexa Wilding.
