In today’s figure-conscious world, the word swimwear is often associated with quasi-neurotic tendencies. You know, girl gets invited to poolside cabana, feigns excitement, and then in a fit of hysteria high tails it to the nearest store only to leave empty handed. Sound familiar?
Well if Red Carter has anything to say about it, those days are done.
“The hottest suit is the one that gives you the confidence to wear it more than just once,” declares Daniel “Red” Carter, seasoned designer and creator of the Red Carter collection. An enigmatic, quirky character whose experience and intuition stems from years in the water, Carter has his hands on the pulse of “sexy.” A former swimmer, diver, and water polo player, he grew up amongst the tanned and toned bodies in Southern California, a place where beach bunnies come a-dime-a-dozen and where swimwear is often considered a mandatory uniform. |

It was after graduating from the Otis/Parson School of Art and Design in Los Angeles, that Carter began to plan his next move. Taking his contagious flair and showmanship to the fashion capital of New York City, he started working in sportswear for big-name-labels like Guess Jeans, Rampage, Mossimo, Victoria’s Secret, and Oscar de la Renta. It was during this time, he says, that he amassed some of his most noteworthy techniques, including the use of precise cut and fit in his designs. “I was hesitant to transition from sportswear to swimwear,” admits Carter. “But ultimately I was able to bring my past experience to the table and that ended up giving me a huge advantage when it came to the fit and flattery of my designs.” |

A love for Miami’s bold colors and forward styles eventually lead him to his adopted home, a place Carter has since become attached to not just for its seaside culture but also for the intoxicating energy and art-deco ambiance. An admirer of past era’s, he’s gone so far as to produce his newest collection in homage to the roaring 20s—specifically mentioning Edith Piaf, Joan Crawford, and the Art Décor friezes of Miami as inspirations. “Summer 08’ is all about accentuating the body and making women feel glamorous,” Carter proclaims. “I think it takes real talent to be able to make a classic both fresh and stylish.” Other design staples this season include tribal and ethnic prints with names like Chrysanthemum and Taj, along with color-blocking, nautical, painterly and watercolor prints—each available in a plethora of cuts, from unassuming to adventurous. “I use prints to enhance the body. I also love embellishments like nail heads and embroidery, which keeps the swimwear fresh.”
From monokinis with novelty rings to cutaways, tankinis and Carter’s favorite, the bikini, there are limitless options in a rainbow of colors and styles. And for those that prefer simple and modest to brash and brazen? Have no fear says Carter, because next season, black is the new black. |
