Word to the wise…for craftsmanship and quality, a pricetag often belies. As the luxury life calls one to be discerning with one’s earnings, thy shalt secure the perfect raiment with criteria most pertinent. A splendidly sound buy offers a world of worth, and choosing jewels within these rules may be a chore that most abhor. For such a femme’s dilemma, luck!...Lana understands. Designer Lana Fertelmeister launched her namesake jewelry line in 2003, though not initially inclined towards an accessory obsession. “As a clothing designer by trade, I was always looking to find jewelry and never found what I was looking for,” says Lana. As she met her husband-to-be during the craze of the Carrie Bradshaw nameplate necklace and desired to tell the world of her “taken” status, Lana designed a necklace with his name with a hanging heart over it, “Just for me,” she says.

Henceforth, Lana’s love confession turned into a full-time profession. “It just took off…I couldn’t go anywhere without somebody making a comment and hoping to find their own. I started realizing that there is a real need for easy, everyday wearable jewelry that is also fine.” From errands and weekends to the most divine wine-and-dine, Lana crafts versatile pieces in yellow, rose, and white gold. Form meets function in her exquisite, yet accessible line. “It’s for every day, for casual to fabulous to red carpet, but it’s all real, and it’s affordable,” says Lana. “It’s available to everybody; it’s casual luxury, which is the world that everyone lives in now.”

The brand has been featured on Sex & The City, Cashmere Mafia, and many feature films, as well as being profiled in WWD, Lucky, LA Confidential, and several other noteworthy publications. Yet, for Lana, the true prestige exists as her brand crosses all careers and touches all time zones. She thrives on seeing her designs go effortlessly from meetings to the market; from breakfast to the Biz. Speaking of, Lana has cultivated quite the celeb following, with top stars such as Cameron Diaz, Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, and Kate Hudson coveting her creations. In fact, the three-tiered earring bought by Cameron Diaz from Fred Segal (one of the first stores to launch her collection) was the creation that provided immediate illumination. “Cameron wore them to the premiere of Charlie’s Angels, and that day solidified the beginning of my business,” says Lana.

The spotlight shined from that Hollywood find, yet, says Lana, “I love meeting all of my clients. No one is different than anyone else. Any woman can really connect to this jewelry and, while it’s fine, she’s also able to afford it. It’s those three elements that connect us to the main stream. Seeing ‘Mrs. Jones’ at Whole Foods, without make-up, in sweats, wearing my earrings like it’s no big deal… it’s mind-blowing to this day. It’s why I do what I do.”

For Lana, it’s about creating value through versatility and maintaining a grounded perspective through both the successes and the strife. “Life is great,” says the designer. “It’s hectic and wild, but that’s the ride we’re on!” Right on, fawn.
