Musing on Margiela
2009 saw the highly buzzed-about exit of Belgian-born, Paris-based Martin Margiela from his namesake storied fashion house; necessarily, as Margiela’s aggressive twists on traditional design tendencies served in the transforming of global fashion for all future generations. The designer’s radical usage of Japanese deconstruction became a trademark of Margiela’s label, founded in 1988 after his work with the house of Gaultier. Mysterious, menacing, and magnificent, his designs incorporated the outsizing of garments, a monochrome palette, and non-traditional fabrics, all of which suggested an entirely new worldview. Pour through pages designed exclusively by Margiela himself and experience a peek inside the intimate world of this truly outstanding and original individual. Maison Martin Margiela, $100, available online.
