Kim Schlegel Whitman, who has literally written books on entertaining, likes to serve a dessert buffet that starts at 9 p.m. so guests can visit other parties and then stop by for sweets.
“I love giving my dessert buffet a theme such as ‘peppermint’ or ‘chocolate mint,’ but it isn't a requirement. Just try to have a variety of items—cookies, candies, pies, cakes, trifle, and tarts. Don't forget a gingerbread house! It makes a wonderful centerpiece.
“Signature drinks are helpful. We created a special eggnog concoction that was served over ice in addition to wine and champagne. It is much easier to have one signature cocktail than a full bar.
“I love adding a little something to the champagne I serve.
