What happens when an entrepreneurial heart meets a fashion challenge? Sparks fly and a brand is born. At least that was the result in the case of Katy Messersmith, the Texas native with a knack for business and a passion for charity. |

Katydid Collection, her lifestyle brand, was born from a mix of necessity and innate creativity: when Messersmith failed to meet up with her luggage on a two-month volunteer trip to Ghana, she had no choice but to collaborate with the village seamstresses.
"Creating a new wardrobe was such fun and sparked a fire in me to create more," she says. "When I returned to the U.S., I immediately began working on starting my own business. I began selling my creations on eBay; I couldn't have dreamed in those early days that I would be where I am a decade later. It's been a wonderful adventure!"
Another dream she never fathomed, much less thought would come true? Katy's SFB Inc. venture just made it onto the Inc. 500! She's number 319 on the overall list, and number 20 in Consumer Products & Services.
