Fall 2011: New York Fashion Week’s Finest

DALLAS | SHOP | 03.04.2011 | Nadia Dabbakeh.   New York Fashion Week spawned a new era of fashion, with loads of inspiration for fall wardrobes. Over-the-top theatrics have taken over—from the usual showstoppers to intimate presentations to the typically tame collections. Decadence is back, and Pinkmemo is swayed...but in which direction? We’re sharing the elements that made an impact on us, and—for a change of pace—we also polled a few of Dallas’ most stylish men to get their take.
Katrina Szish, PinkMemo EIC: The Marc Jacobs Collection is always a treat, from the grand sets to the glam front row to the of-the-moment models. The F/W 2011 offerings were some of the best I've seen in several seasons. As Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People" blared from megawatt speakers, models walked a mirrored catwalk dotted with massive white padded vertical pillars. The collection was also dotted -- literally -- with polka dots. On hosiery, hats, bags, dresses, skirts, tops, and more, Jacobs' inspired use of this simple graphic element added elegant whimsy to stark silhouettes. Judging from audience reactions (Leighton Meester, Fergie, Vanessa Hudgens, Karen Elson), I wasn’t the only one wowed.

Jason Sheeler, FD Luxe Style Editor: There's a whole lot of stuff to look at during fashion week. But two weeks later, the collection that I actually care about came from a designer I tried hard to ignore. Victoria Beckham's quiet, intimate presentation of 'real' clothes was a chance to see the construction of sturdy, sexy, no-frills sportswear. She narrated the whole show, charmingly explaining, say, the deft handiwork of a cashmere jacket's rolled shoulder. This from the Wife of Beckham who toured the world singing "ziga-zig-ah."

Gregg Asher, Fashion Baggage: My favorite was Doo.Ri. It looked expensive and really well-made and felt very much like a luxury line. I thoroughly enjoyed attending this show because it sort of reminded me of a private cocktail party. The group wasn't as large, so it seemed a little more intimate, and the people watching at this one seemed as chic as the collection itself. I could envision someone putting on these pieces and feeling tailored with ease, while still looking very modern. Also, it didn't show any T&A, but still looked provocative without revealing any skin. And, I enjoyed seeing other people from Dallas at that show.
