October 2008 l Issue Eighteen

In spite of blistering heat and end of summer blues, The Fashionistas' new Limelight Group managed to draw out several hundred of Dallas' young and fabulous types to celebrate the 2nd annual LFT Universe Party.  Limelight Group president, Kirby Allison, and his team of hardworking hipsters (Anna Allen, Ryan Bent, Chris Butcher, Heather Cleaver, Ernesto Gallegos, Kristen Kensell and Bobby Schandra) who worked all summer putting together a party that had something for everybody.  "There are so many cute people here and the energy is so great", said long-time Fashionista supporter Doss Alexander. Limelighters worked the room throughout the evening charming the crowd, selling raffle tickets and memberships to the hottest non-profit in town (that would be The Fashionistas, of course). When the festivities ended at LFT, those who could stay up past 9:00pm moved to the after party hosted by Medina.

Luncheons are not my favorite type of event, but when Women that Soar founder, Gina Grant, asked me to present a Brilliantly You award to my dear friend Myra Walker, I agreed.  Other notables who received the award at the Dallas Arboretum were Sherri Shepherd, Tina Knowles (Beyonce's mother), Casey Shilts, Mary Poss, Dolores Gomez Barzune, Mary Ann Thompson Frenk, Teresa Parravano, Dee Lincoln and Debbie Denmon.  While all of these women are incredible and worthy of any award anyone wishes to bestow upon them, the event was a disaster. With 10 recipients, 10 presenters, two vocalists (one of whom sang so badly out of tune, it hurt), a fashion show, an auctioneer who was auctioning off nothing and emcees Lance Avery Morgan and Kimberly Whitman who were trying to keep things moving and upbeat, it lasted over 3 hours.  By the time I got up to present to Myra, half of the room had left and that was only the 5th presentation. Hopefully next year they will figure out how to edit the thing down to a reasonable amount of time.

Speaking of Kim Whitman, I attended the signing for her gorgeous new book, Tabescapes: Setting the Table with Style.  I ran into the Frederic Fekkai Salon, where the event was being held, 15 minutes early because I had to get on to two other affairs that evening and caught Kim having her makeup done.  She is so gorgeous, she really doesn't need makeup, but we had fun chatting until she had to change and greet her public.  When Kim came out of the dressing area, she was met by a camera crew who is apparently filming a TV show about her.  I don't know the details, but I'll keep you posted. The evening was a huge success and my sources told me that she ran out of books twice.

Russell Simmons is well known for co-founding DEF Jam Records, but in recent years his interests have taken a philanthropic turn.  His latest venture into the non-profit world is the Diamond Empowerment Fund, which raises funds to help African kids get an education.  Russell, together with co-hosts Pat and Emmitt Smith, decided to launch the charity’s first big fundraiser called Dallas Rocks and recruited Rozalyn and Robert St. Pe Colombo to be the event chairs.  The announcement party was held at Trece, one of Robert's restaurants, and was packed to the rafters with local sports superstars.  I had a chance to meet Russell and his team - all of whom were wonderful and full of enthusiasm and dedication for the cause.  Dallas Rocks will be held on Friday, November 7 at Cityplace and will honor NBA legend Magic Johnson.

Patricia and Juliana Cairone

Onto the third event for the evening, our very own PinkMemo hosted a cocktail reception for RARE Vintage, New York's premier destination for vintage couture. Owner Juliana Cairone presented pieces from her collection at the Goss-Michael foundation to a bevy of rare Dallas beauties and fashion aficionados who enjoyed sipping RAREtinis and munching on delicious hors d'oeuvres provided by the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek.  Guests included Joe Pacetti-Medici, Deborah Scott, Capera Ryan, John Reoch, Joyce Goss, Lisa Garza and Abi Ferrin. While I was waiting for the valet to fetch my car, I ran into Lisa and Abi. Lisa was all worked up about a TV show she has been working on, or wanting to work on.  Apparently everyone in Dallas has a show in the works these days.   An appointment only trunk show was held following the cocktail reception with proceeds benefiting the Goss-Michael Scholarship Foundation.

I always do everything my friend Tina Craig (aka, the Bagsnob) says, so when she told me to show up at the Oscar de la Renta store to meet author Tatiana Boncompagni, I complied.  Tatiana is a thoroughbred New Yorker whose mother is Italian royalty.  Her first book, Gilding Lily, tells the tale of a socialite who begins to write essays about the rich and snobbish and how she manages to navigate through the shark-infested waters of Manhattan society.  My guess is the book is a bit autobiographical.  Tatiana may be writing about fashion and society these days, but her background is in finance.  She has written for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times and Vogue and she told me that she enjoys writing about financial indices.  I had to ask my husband what that meant.

Each fall D Magazine fashion editor, Stephanie Quadri, throws a VIP party to unveil the September issue.  This year's celebration was held at One Arts Plaza and was co-hosted by Scoop who showed their latest looks.  Once again, The Fashionistas were in full force as special guests of D.  The lobby at One Arts is cavernous, but D always attracts a big crowd so the place was packed.  Being a fashion event, everyone tried very hard to look as cool and as au currant as possible.  Even some of the men in attendance were bitten by the fashion bug including Mark Esposito who was wearing a great shirt and jacket by Burberry. Take note guys, we are watching you.
