Bermano’s Secret Garden

Bermano, a local artist and philanthropist, opened a “Secret Garden” Friday, December 9^th, exhibiting his pop art in the heart of Uptown to a private viewing party. Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, Bermano never painted as a child or young adult.

He was influenced to paint after viewing a Van Gogh painting in 2003, however Bermano did not take up the hobby seriously until November of 2010. He now paints out of pure pleasure and announced half of his profits from the sales of his Secret Garden will go to charity.

Shepard Fairey a Phenomenon at Dallas Contemporary

Combining elements of graffiti and pop art, Shepard Fairey is best known for the poster he created during the last presidential election of Barak Obama. He also developed a campaign of street art with the theme of “Obey Giant,” referring to the late professional wrestler Andre the Giant. Now Fairey turns his talents on Dallas, in collaboration with the Dallas Contemporary.

Join co- chairmen Bradley Agather, Hannah Hoffman and Meghan Looney, on Saturday, February 4^th at the Dallas Contemporary for the phenomenal first annual dance party called Phenomenon, featuring the Los Angeles based graffiti artist Shepard Fairey.

Phenomenon celebrates the creation of over 12 murals Shepard Fairey will paint throughout Dallas, (the largest in any city) specifically West Dallas using mixed materials with paint. The neon-themed dance extravaganza will get its groove on just hours after Fairey completes this citywide mural project, and as a worldwide touring DJ, Fairey will also spin tunes throughout the evening.

The celebration begins at 9:00 P.M. with the very best of Dallas’ food trucks serving nosh till midnight. And, there is always an excuse to shop—check out the artists’ pop-up shop with signed posters, OBEY clothing, books and more.

Runway To Win

The Republican race for the White House is in full swing. The candidates will do just about anything to get a nomination, even give out sweater vests (I’m talking to you Rick Santorum). But President Obama has been rather quiet with his re-election plans. Even his Runway to Win campaign has gone under the radar. And, politics aside it’s a good designer deal!

Runway to Win is a follow up to Obama’s Runway to Change campaign in 2008, several designers, like Tory Burch, Tracey Reese, and other popular designers created T-Shirts to sell on the Presidential hopeful’s website. Fast forward, 3 years and 1 month, and the President has tapped into his inner fashionista again and called upon some of the country’s top fashion designer’s to help him create a rather stylish campaign.

So, which designers are participating? Marc Jacobs, Eddie Borgo, Tory Burch, Beyonce & Tina Knowles, Derek Lam, Rachel Roy, and Narciso Rodriguez just to name a few. But wait, there’s more—Sean John, Vera Wang, Russell Simmons, and others are also contributing items to the White House race however, their items have not been released yet. Soup’s On For The Stewpot

There are several must-do’s for foodies who frequent the restaurant scene in Dallas. Enjoy sumptuous Southwest cuisine by two founding chefs, Chef Fearing or Chef Pyles. On Tuesday, January 24, Chef Luscher will lead a group of the cities best chefs at the annual SOUP’S ON event. Hosted by The Stewpot Alliance, the event will raise funds for The Stewpot, a non-profit run by the First Presbyterian Church downtown helping rehabilitate our cities homeless while offering a safe haven for these individuals.

The Stewpot is one of Dallas’ most important charities, helping our fellow men every day. And I am not the only one who thinks so, the outstanding line up of chefs for Tuesday’s event does, as well. Chefs Randall Copeland and Nathan Tate, Restaurant Ava; Bruno Davaillon, Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek; Kevin Garvin, Neiman Marcus Restaurants; Keith Hanks, The Capital Grille; Matt McCallister, Campo Modern Country Bistro; Abraham Salum, Komali and Salum; and Janice Provost, Parigi, will join Luscher in preparing a signature soup to be served as the first course of the luncheon.

The event hopes to raise $250K through attendance, and with an original art and jewelry sale of works created by artists of The Stewpot Open Art Programs. Author and former MSNBC correspondent Jeannette Walls will attend as a speaker, telling her story of a childhood filled with similar issues The Stewpot clients face daily, as chronicled in her book, The Glass Castle. An Affair of the Art: Glory of the Age, Kick-Off

The Dallas Museum of Art, Junior Associates Circle’s, 19^th annual “An Affair of the Art: Glory of Age” kick-off event was hosted in November at Dallas’ new fave restaurant Private Social.

Private Social Executive Chef Tiffany Derry, and Private Social Partner Andy Austin, featured signature appetizers with specialty cocktails titled Aviation a mix of Gordon’s London Dry Gin, Crème de Violette, fresh lemon juice, and Luxardo Maraschino, and Blood & Sand a Dewar’s White Label cocktail mixed with Doulin Rouge, Cherry Heering Liquer and fresh orange juice. Aptly delicious!

Jessi Watkins chaired the evening, and Shonn and Clarence Brown, this year’s “An Affair of the Art” 2012 Chairs attended along with guests Samantha Smith, Haley Schultheis, and Darrell and Suzanne Wellen.
