Golden Globes Fashion

Awards season is under way, and while the actors hope to win big, I’m looking forward to them dressing big.  At last night’s 67th Annual Golden Globes, we were able to see some of our favorite runway looks come to life on the red carpet.

Inglourious Basterds’ Diane Kruger donned a frothy Christian Lacroix number in blushing pink with white accents looking, well, glorious. She was right on trend with the elaborate ruffle around the shoulders and the overall ombré effect. She also wins best accessory with that charming umbrella caddy.

Avatar was a mega-hit, and so was star Zoe Saldana’s rich, berry hued strapless Louis Vuitton gown. The deconstructed ruffle tiered bottom was fun and flirty, and the top hugged her thin frame perfectly.

House’s Olivia Wilde went with a classic, gunmetal Gucci silhouette, proving once again that the Florentine fashion house knows just how to accentuate a woman’s body.

The biggest risk takers of the night were Nine’s Kate Hudson and Drew Barrymore, who won Best Actress in a TV Movie/Mini Series for her work in Grey Gardens. Hudson’s futuristic winter white Marchesa and matching sky-high platforms had a very pleasant Lady Gaga inspired aura about them. As did Barrymore’s nude Atelier Versace with the gathered hip and shoulder accents, which glistened just as prettily as her smile.

As for A Single Man’s Julianne Moore in a charcoal, off-shoulder Balenciaga gown; it would take a lot for the stunning actress to look bad, but with Tom Ford as her date, I was expecting to be blown away. Wouldn’t it have been fun if she’s resurrected one of Ford’s sexy, glamorous Gucci gowns of the late 90s?

Ross Akard Gallery Opening

The arts are slowly reawakening in downtown Dallas. This month, the Dallas Arts District is celebrating the opening of its first art gallery in over three decades.The new Ross Akard Gallery has been established downtown in the treasured Fairmont Hotel.Gallery owner and curator Bryan Embry, has a deep appreciation for both art and community and in an astonishingly gratuitous gesture, plans to invest 100% of the gallery’s profits each year into local non-profit organizations to help sustain and strengthen their business and purpose, which will be repaid to him at the end of the year.

Though the gallery recently opened its doors to the public on January 10^th, join Embry and exhibited artists on Thursday, January 21^st from 7-9pm as the new space celebrates with an intimate grand opening party.

SJP For Halston

As images of Sarah Jessica Parker shooting scenes for the new Sex and the City movie in Halston began to circulate, so did the rumors that she would be a new face for the brand. It seems that was the least of it – WWD reports that the stylish star has signed a deal to take on an active design role, possibly even that of creative director for Halston Heritage, the newly launched secondary line aiming to reinvent the legendary designer’s classic pieces for the modern woman.

We’ve seen what celebrities can do to a major fashion house when they take on design roles (Lindsay Lohan at Ungaro was far from a hit), but this collaboration makes a little more sense. While I must admit I’m relieved that she won’t be working on the actual runway collection with Marios Schwab, SJP’s contemporary style seems to be exactly what Heritage is pushing, so it may be exactly what the brand needs to get off the ground.

Or is it? Let’s not dismiss the fact that the label was only relaunched recently, in 2007, under The Weinstein Co. and Hilco Consumer Capital LLC (who acquired it from owner James J. Ammeen and Neema Clothing Ltd.). Halston has been struggling for the last two seasons under designer Marco Zanini, without making much impact, and next month will be the unveiling of Schwab’s first collection for the house. Maybe Halston should focus on the main line and let Schwab flourish before they bring a celebrity name on board.

SJP is undoubtedly known for her style on Sex and the City and the red carpet, but one must not forget that she works with such style icons as Pat Field – is Halston getting Carried away, or could this be a smart move to rejuvenate the struggling brand? Time can only tell!

Project Runway – The Video Game

Have an odd yearning to hear Tim Gunn tell you to “make it work”?  On March 2nd, you can, thanks to a recent melding of fashion TV and the video game market.  IMG, the driving force behind Fashion Week, announced this week that Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Gunn will lend their voices to a simulation game in conjunction with Lifetime and 505 Games. No word on whether Nina Garcia will be participating.

Made for the Wii console, the game allows players to pick fabrics, work on deadline to create a winning look, and sit through the agonies of being judged.

This isn’t the first time the $20 billion U.S. video game industry has tried to appeal to the 18- to -25 year old female market. You may remember “Fashion Week: Junior Stylist”, released by 505 Games in June of ’09, or Nintendo’s “Style Savvy”, released in ’08.  And, there’s more to come.  Peter Levy, managing director of IMG Fashion and organizer of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, let slip that a fashion week-inspired video game is in the works, with makeup artist Pat McGrath on board. According to game producers, we ladies only respond to video games that are “easy to understand” (excuse me?!) and free of violence and gore (which I can do without), and that the “formula” to attract women includes the words “hair,” “makeup” and “accessories.”

I’m not sure how I feel about this pseudo-insult, as it seems like the wrong way to appeal to potential female gamers, but I may try the game just to see what it’s like – who knows, it may be the new “it” thing within fashion circles. Conveniently, guess whose birthday is in March…
