Fashion.  It’s a fickle world and everyone wants a piece of it.  And nowadays it seems like every time you turn around or every person you meet is a designer.  A jewelry designer, a handbag designer, a stationary designer, the list goes on and on.  But there seems to be a select few who are truly gifted, talented and creative enough to be real fashion designers.  And it just so happens, these very designers exist right here in Dallas.  Intrigued?  It gets better.

The womenswear line is called Koppani, and is created by the dynamic design duo of Zsofia Mezey and Sandra Zelionkaite. This pair of fabulously talented young women are the creative forces behind this sensational new clothing line.

Established in 2006, the Koppani brand is something very special, very unique and just might become the new label spoken from the lips of the hippest fashionistas.  So how did Koppani come to be?  What is Zsofia’s and Sandra’s story and how did they come together to create such beautiful, fashion forward pieces?  Let’s find out.

Zsofia is incredibly sweet, engaging, and distinctly European. Growing up in Romania, she had a love for fashion at an early age.  Zsofia said her inspiration for becoming a fashion designer happened as she was creating pieces for herself and from doing her own alterations to make her clothes fit better.  Zsofia said, “I didn’t like what I was seeing in stores and nothing fit me properly.  So I decided to make things for myself.”  Zsofia remembers getting bombarded by compliments on her clothes from random people off the street.  Then her friends started wanting her to make clothes for them.  From then on, her idea to start her own clothing line came to light.

“I had always wanted to have my own business.  It was really all the compliments and people wanting what I was wearing and wanting me to make them clothes that inspired me into creating a fashion line,” Zsofia said. “I wasn’t classically trained.  I was self-taught.  Everything I knew just came naturally.”

When Zsofia moved to the U.S. in 1999, she knew she wanted a partner but didn’t meet Sandra until 2004.  A mutual friend who thought the two ladies would make a great team introduced them.  And do they ever!  “Our strengths compliment our weaknesses.  We share the same vision,” said Zsofia.

Sandra grew up in Lithuania and came to the States in 2006.  She is a lovely, genuine and gifted designer.  “I have always been very artistic.  I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer since I was in the fifth grade.  Well, a designer or a classical pianist.  But I decided fashion was more fun,” Sandra said.  She began doing sketches in the seventh grade and has continued the same passion to the present day.  Sandra received a scholarship from the Art Academy in Lithuania to study fashion and art.  After moving to Dallas, she continued training at El Centro so she could further master her craft.

“I am inspired by the details and origination of things.  Details just come into my head and I turn them into a garment.  I am very visionary.  I don’t know where all the vision comes from, it’s just there, in my head,” Sandra said.  (This spoken from a true artistic talent.)  “Ultimately, I want to see our designs on the couture runway,” Sandra said.

Both Zsofia and Sandra share a common goal and vision:  to be unique and to stand out.  The word Koppani basically translates into 'outside the box', which is exactly what they are.  Neither designer wants to see their pieces being mass-produced or mass marketed.  Koppani wants to be very exclusive using high quality luxurious fabrics with the most delicate and intricate detail, basically, quality over quantity; they design pieces that are classic and timeless but current and chic.  They never want to copy other designers, but want to set trends.  “We want our dresses to be worn for years and years, season after season. We want to be fashion forward but stay in people’s closets for a long time,” said Zsofia.

The Koppani collection is mainly comprised of great, wearable dresses that can go from day to evening.  But they are expanding their up-coming Fall Winter 2008 collection to include cashmere coats, dramatic hats, and elegant gloves.  Their use of fine fabrics such as silks, wools and boucles make their pieces so elegant and lady like, but current and youthful at the same time.  “I just want to create pieces that people love.  I want people to love my clothes,” Zsofia said with a smile.  And what’s not to love?  Koppani and the designers are cool, sophisticated and chic.  Let PinkMemo.com be the first to tell you:  Get your Koppani on!
