Dallasites do not, as some might believe, spring forward. It is as if by instinct that we propel passionately into the next season, eager for nice days, new duds, and nosh-worthy dining. March and April did deliver, obliging us with a little pręt-a-porter down the runway and more than a few fashionable fetes, which were, for this sartorial soul, equivalent to the gastronomical goodness of caviar and champagne.

Spring 2008’s installation of Fashion at the Park proved to be a four-day fashion fest of bite-sized proportions on which I eagerly nibbled. Hardly enough seconds seemed to remain on the clock before it seemed necessary to jump to the next event after the lights had gone down on the last. I did, however, certainly put my most fashionable efforts forth…in 4-inch heels, mind you. Wednesday evening marked the commencement of the festivities, complete with all taste, luxury, and humor to which the Barneys lover subscribes. BNY Creative Director Simon Doonan successfully filled said humor segment with his antics during the runway show, which also, of course, was luxe to the very core. Mingling ensued during the after-party upon the coming together of stylish somebodies such as Stacy Girard and Stephanie Quadri, along with Barneys own go-to guy Jackson and Store Manager Ken Foret, among others.

A subsequent scoot over to the Custo Barcelona runway show allowed for my gainful education as to the spring stylings of designers Custo and David Dalma. A collection, at once, psychedelic and organic, and, in the same moment, geometric and structured, spring 2008 was sartorially satisfactory. Standouts included a luscious laminated trench and a full-length dress flocked with golden fringe and embellished with sequin-studded detail on the neckline.

Thursday brought about several simultaneously stylish happenings for which coordination and concentration was requisite (you will recall the mention of 4-inch heels). My evening begin downtown at FIG, with a little soiree held in honor of L.A. designer Meghan Noland. The event, showcasing Meghan’s signature collection, Meghan Fabulous, happened to coincide with FIG’s Fall Market. Modern Luxury Editor Stacy Girard also attended as the designated host of a Q&A session with Meghan amongst the throngs of her admirers. Unfortunately, Mother Nature issued a veto with wild winds that kicked up on the outside lawn…we’re talking gusts with a capital G.

Through the wind tunnel and back to NorthPark I trekked for the Martin and Osa event that benefited The Fashionistas. Trying to work the windblown look (unsuccessfully, I’m afraid), I nibbled on bites provided by Lisa Garza amongst guests such as Kim Askew, Liani Kotcher, and Debbie Denmon whilst we all admired the marvelousness that is M+O. Notable goods here included cozy cashmere sweaters, easy tees, and refined separates, and with the extra discount for attendees, resistance was futile. In the words of my fellow Barneys chum, stylishly sly Matthew Sanchez, “Next!” Club Monaco called for my attention as the store presented its Living Fashion event, complete with a floral sculpture created exclusively for the event by Cymbidium Flowers. Here, again, I was poised to purchase, as I beheld Club Monaco’s gorgeous spring collection in a standby black-and-white palette injected with pops of bright pinks and yellows…readily, I’ll admit my guilt as a repeated spender, though I swear, it was the power of the flower!

Friday’s fashionable festivities began with the Power of Style runway show, presented by Nordstrom and VOGUE and including fashions from designers such as Versace, Roberto Cavalli, and Peter Som. As style stamina and beauty rest are, of course, inextricably linked, I catnapped before bouncing back to the tent to meet and mingle with the darling Robyn Wise before the Intermix runway show. The raving of ’Mix mavens ensued along with an after-party in the store, whereby Robyn and I chatted with Rob Brinkley and rifled eagerly through our goody bags. Ahh, the perks of the Park!

The evening of Thursday, March 13th had everyone seeing spots…in shades of signature “Bartlett blue”, that is…Those of us eager to sneak a peek at L.Bartlett’s new digs freely and fashionably viewed and ooed, taking stock of owner Laura Bush’s stylish selection in a lovely little soiree celebrating the new space housing them. Bush briefly considered relocating to the Shops at Legacy before this prime spot opened up…lucky Laura. Now, Bush’s biz will take place in the nucleus of West Village, where the meandering of bright young things often occurs.

Tuesday, March 18th came with torrential downpours and gusty winds that likely left most in a mood…we, on the other hand, had the urge to merge. Shaking off the raindrops and smoothing down our dampened locks, we gathered gleefully at a private dinner hosted by MERGE owner Alana Turner, myself, along with Joanne Yurich, Victoria Snee, F!D Luxe editor Tracy Hayes, and Alana’s right-hand woman and MERGE assistant manager, Melissa. Champagne sipping brought forth chitchat about Alana’s upcoming wedding in Mexico and subsequent honeymoon excursion…to India! In fact, cocktail conversation was all about travel, from rampant curiosity over Alana’s nuptials to Joanne’s fascinating anecdotes of her recent trip to China. Perusing the racks of Alana’s latest buys allowed us to become fully informed as to the ‘it’ items of the season in the world of MERGE, such as leather goods from Loeffler Randall and sweet separates from Mike and Chris. The rain had apparently turned us ravenous and we noshed without restraint on a delightful dinner catered by Party Maker that served to provide a warm glow to the dreary evening.

Friday April 4th saw the gathering of kind-hearted souls at the Hilton Anatole for the annual Heroes and Handbags event, sponsored by Modern Luxury Dallas and benefiting Heroes for Children, a nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to the families of young cancer patients in the state of Texas. In honor of founders Larissa Linton and Jenny Scott, both of whom lost daughters to childhood cancer, designer Elaine Turner crafted exclusive bags in honor of their children, “Allie” and “Taylor”, which were up for auction alongside covetables from Chanel, Fendi, and Gucci, among others. A seated brunch and touching presentation coordinated by the lovely Rhonda Sargent Chambers would follow.

Downtown in the daylight? You bet. With hurried heels did I scurry to One Marcus Square for the first annual Neiman Marcus Stiletto Strut on the breezy, yet bright morning of Saturday, April 5th. Here, well-heeled (and intentioned) patrons would gather willingly in the gorgeous flagship, all set to saunter around the city block in a benefit for the American Heart Association. Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and Neiman’s downtown manager Shelle Sills spoke briefly as the festivities commenced, and, in following, DJ Lucy Wrubel spun it round as strutters paraded around the city block. The event, presented by the Joule Hotel, the Baylor Jack and Jane Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital and the Heart Hospital Baylor of Plano, also brought forth stylish ‘soles’ Brooke Hortenstein and Rob Brinkey and Neiman’s own, Ken Downing…quite the hearty round of platformed patronage!
